“ Finally, I have discovered (through my boyfriend's family) the BEST mochi shop in Los Angeles!!! I absolutely LOVE mochi, but I felt I couldn't find anything good except for in Hawaii and in Japan. When I was introduced to this shop, I was blown away. Not only is the quality of the mochi high, but the prices are relatively affordable as well. We visited spontaneously on a Sunday afternoon and there was a line out the door, but the line moved relatively fast. I believe they take credit card as well. I absolutely love: * Peanut Butter Mochi * Kinako Mochi (very similar to warabimochi) * Chofu (sweet mochi wrapped in a pancake) I cannot wait to try the Chocolate Mochi someday! “ Tried this mochi shop many years ago and liked it. Came back for more and there was a line. Tried the chocolate mochi after seeing a yelp review here. I thought it was ok compare to the one I like in the Bay Area. The chocolate inside is a bit hard and not smooth. Also got the strawberry mochi and soy powder mochi. The red bean is nice and not too sweet. The mochi itself was not as soft as I expected. I would give it a 3.5 but round up to 4 as this might be the best one in LA. But I'm happy Bay Area actually has some better mochi ”

“ If you love mochi you have to come here. The texture and the way the mochi feels when you bite it is unique. I came here 2x in one week. It's just that good! I got an assortment of them. Most cost $2-2.75 each. You have to spend at least $15 to use credit card. They also sell other Japanese snacks and teas. ”

“ Fugetsu-do has been making Mochi in Los Angeles for 121 years. Think about that. It survived through both world wars, including when Japanese Americans were sequestered in internment camps in WWII. It has a remarkable history and outstanding mochi. After all this time, it's still family owned. When I'm in the area, I can't pass up getting my chocolate mochi. When I'm not in the area, I can find my chocolate mochi from fugetsu-do at japanese groceries in Torrance, Little Tokyo, or Costa Mesa. Regardless, I would encourage you to do yourself a favor and check out this location on first street in DTLA, then walk over to the Japanese American National Museum at the end of the block to learn about the history of Asian Americans in the US. Even if you don't check out the museum, please know that Little Tokyo and its restaurants are a hidden gem in Los Angeles and Fugetsu-do is a keystone in that community. ”

“ In my visit to Little Tokyo, there was no way I was leaving without trying the iconic Fugetsu-Do which has been part of the LA community for over a century. Their mochi always look so good everytime I see a post about them. This store has been around since 1903 so clearly they are doing something right! The shop inside is tiny and paying cash is also preferred especially for items under $20. I wanted to try their daifuku, green tea mochi, and strawberry mochi. My favorite would easily be the green tea mochi. It's just the right amount of sweetness and you can really taste that green tea flavor, but at the same time its no overpowering. The mochi itself made of the glutinous rice is so soft and has a nice chewy texture. It's something you have to try yourself. The service is also friendly and it's cool to also learn the history of a shop like this. It's a small family owned business that has been passed on for generations and I hope that continues because this was definitely some of the best mochi I have ever had. Absolutely a must try. ”

“ I was so impressed with how soft the mochis were. I ended up getting two strawberry kinds, one mango, and the other was one with the powder on top- I can't recall the name. All of them were so fun to eat and weren't overly sweet. I've never had such soft mochi! I'll definitely revisit when I'm in the area again! The snacks were a little pricey but overall my experience was great! ”

“ This is one of the survivors of the old school Japanese businesses. They are located the historic First Street row of businesses in J Town. I first started coming here as a little kid in the 1970s and the look and feel of the shop hasn't changed that much. Same family owners but with a more multicultural staff. There was a long line outside the shop on the Saturday we went to the shop with mostly tourists but a few of us "old time customers " were there as well. We bought a 20 pies box and some of rue Dodgers Blue Ohtani manny. Still tastes consistently great after so many years. Five stars! ”

The extra crowd might be due to the fact that the Dodgers' World Series Game 2 is this afternoon and a lot of people decided to make a day out of it before going to the game. Lucky bastards. Those of us who don't have tickets will just have to make do with the vibe and no game. Though the line goes out the door, Fugetsu-Do has some extra staff on hand and the line went by very quickly. Some Dodger themed desserts were available. The black sesame mochi is soooo good. The Strawberry one is also very very good. Everything is good, but those are y faves. ”
